Michael Blaine Shatzer was imprisoned at the Maryland Correctional Institution in Hagerstown for child sexual abuse in 2003 when police asked him about allegations in another case: that he had sexually abused his 3-year-old son.

Shatzer refused to answer questions and asked for a lawyer. A police officer stopped the questioning, and the case went dormant.

Nearly three years later, Shatzer's son was old enough to offer new details, and a different police officer returned to prison to question Shatzer. This time, he waived his Miranda rights and made incriminating statements that led to his conviction.

But the Maryland Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, said Shatzer's statements could not be used. It pointed to a 28-year-old U.S. Supreme Court decision that said once a suspect asks for an attorney, "he is not subject to further questioning until a lawyer has been made available or the suspect himself reinitiates conversation."

The rule was to protect a suspect from self-incrimination in case police tried to badger him into a confession before he, as Justice Antonin Scalia said Monday, "lawyered up."

Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler, supported by the United States, said there was no allegation in Shatzer's case that police badgered him into a confession. He said that police should be able to question a suspect again once there is a "break in custody" -- in this case, that police stopped questioning Shatzer and released him back into the prison's general population.

In that case, Gansler said, police were free to ask him again about the molestation allegations and use his statements, since he did not ask for an attorney the second time.

Justices seemed generally supportive of Gansler's point that police should have been allowed to question Shatzer again, but they had a hard time agreeing on how the rule should be changed.

Roberts worried that police could repeatedly question and dismiss a suspect who asks for a lawyer.

"You know, just sort of catch-and-release, until he finally breaks down and says, 'All right, I'll talk,' " Roberts said.

Public defender Celia A. Davis, representing Shatzer, said the court should not change a rule that sets clear guidelines for law enforcement.

Creating exceptions, she said, "introduces uncertainty into the determinations of what constitutes custody and what length of time might be adequate to excuse the protection."

But the justices wondered what could be done about a suspect who asks for a lawyer, never actually receives one or is convicted, and then is questioned years later, perhaps for a different crime.

Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. posed this hypothetical: What if someone was arrested for joy riding in Maryland, invoked his Fifth Amendment protection, and was never convicted? Could police in Montana question him as a murder suspect in Montana 10 years later?

When Davis said no, Alito replied: "And you don't think that's a ridiculous application of the rule?"

George Vera, a 25-year old 500 lbs inmate in Texas has been hit with gun possession charged for hiding a 9mm gun under his flabs of fat. Although he was searched twice -- once during his arrest and again at the jail, officers never found the weapon in his rolls of skin. Apparently, it fell out while he was taking a shower at the jail.

The psychopath egomaniac judge held the 33 year old in contempt of court and sentenced him to 6 months in jail. The judge has a reputation as being a thin skinned maniac.

The way powerful people treat those who have less power than they do said volumes about them. In this case, this picture tells us that the president simply can't be bothered to help his infirm friend down the stairs and instead leaves that task to the very police officer he belittled in front of the entire nation.

This question is just begging to be asked: who's acting stupidly now?

As some AT commentators point out, this picture becomes a metaphor for ObamaCare. The elderly are left in the back, with only the kindness of the Crowleys of the world, the stand up guys, to depend on. The government has other priorities. One of the major subtexts of the health care debate involves the public's fear of indifferent, powerful bureaucrats ruling their lives. It is one thing to wait in line at the DMV to find out which other line you should wait in, in order to begin the process of waiting for multiple bureaucrats to go through the motions of processing your request. But when we get to health care, waiting often means enduring pain and dysfunction longer than necessary, sometimes a worsening of the condition, and sometimes death.

That's why this image will have genuine resonance. It captures something that older Americans in particular can relate to. The President presses ahead with a program that will tell them to take painkillers instead of getting that artificial hip.

You might ask yourself what my views and issues a re that I would horribly feel so disenfranchised by both major political parties. What kind of nut job am I? Will you please tell me?

Well, these are briefly my views and issues for which I seek representation:

One, illegal immigration. I want you to stop coddling illegal immigrants and secure our borders. Close the underground tunnels. Stop the violence and the trafficking in drugs and people. No amnesty, not again. Been there, done that, no resolution. P.S., I'm not a racist. This isn't to be confused with legal immigration.

Two, the TARP bill, I want it repealed and I want no further funding supplied to it. We told you no, but you did it anyway. I want the remaining unfunded 95% repealed. Freeze, repeal.

Three: Czars, I want the circumvention of our checks and balances stopped immediately. Fire the czars. No more czars. Government officials answer to the process, not to the president. Stop trampling on our Constitution and honor it.

Four, cap and trade. The debate on global warming is not over. There is more to say.

Five, universal healthcare. I will not be rushed into another expensive decision. Don't you dare try to pass this in the middle of the night and then go on break. Slow down!

Six, growing government control. I want states rights and sovereignty fully restored. I want less government in my life, not more. Shrink it down. Mind your own business. You have enough to take care of with your real obligations. Why don't you start there.

Seven, ACORN. I do not want ACORN and its affiliates in charge of our 2010 census. I want them investigated. I also do not want mandatory escrow fees contributed to them every time on every real estate deal that closes. Stop the funding to ACORN and its affiliates pending impartial audits and investigations. I do not trust them with taking the census over with our taxpayer money. I don't trust them with our taxpayer money. Face up to the allegations against them and get it resolved before taxpayers get any more involved with them. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, hello. Stop protecting your political buddies. You work for us, the people. Investigate.

Eight, redistribution of wealth. No, no, no. I work for my money. It is mine. I have always worked for people with more money than I have because they gave me jobs. That is the only redistribution of wealth that I will support. I never got a job from a poor person. Why do you want me to hate my employers? Why -- what do you have against shareholders making a profit?

Nine, charitable contributions. Although I never got a job from a poor person, I have helped many in need. Charity belongs in our local communities, where we know our needs best and can use our local talent and our local resources. Butt out, please. We want to do it ourselves.

Ten, corporate bailouts. Knock it off. Sink or swim like the rest of us. If there are hard times ahead, we'll be better off just getting into it and letting the strong survive. Quick and painful. Have you ever ripped off a Band-Aid? We will pull together. Great things happen in America under great hardship. Give us the chance to innovate. We cannot disappoint you more than you have disappointed us.

Eleven, transparency and accountability. How about it? No, really, how about it? Let's have it. Let's say we give the buzzwords a rest and have some straight honest talk. Please try -- please stop manipulating and trying to appease me with clever wording. I am not the idiot you obviously take me for. Stop sneaking around and meeting in back rooms making deals with your friends. It will only be a prelude to your criminal investigation. Stop hiding things from me.

Twelve, unprecedented quick spending. Stop it now.
Take a breath. Listen to the people. Let's just slow down and get some input from some nonpoliticians on the subject. Stop making everything an emergency. Stop speed reading our bills into law. I am not an activist. I am not a community organizer. Nor am I a terrorist, a militant or a violent person. I am a parent and a grandparent. I work. I'm busy. I'm busy. I am busy, and I am tired. I thought we elected competent people to take care of the business s of government so that we could work, raise our families, pay our bills, have a little recreation, complain about taxes, endure our hardships, pursue our personal goals, cut our lawn, wash our cars on the weekends and be responsible contributing members of society and teach our children to be the same all while living in the home of the free and land of the brave.

I entrusted you with upholding the Constitution. I believed in the checks and balances to keep from getting far off course. What happened? You are very far off course. Do you really think I find humor in the hiring of a speed reader to unintelligently ramble all through a bill that you signed into law without knowing what it contained? I do not. It is a mockery of the responsibility I have entrusted to you. It is a slap in the face. I am not laughing at your arrogance. Why is it that I feel as if you would not trust me to make a single decision about my own life and how I would live it but you should expect that I should trust you with the debt that you have laid on all of us and our children. We did not want the TARP bill. We said no. We would repeal it if we could. I am sure that we still cannot. There is such urgency and recklessness in all of the recent spending.

From my perspective, it seems that all of you have gone insane. I also know that I am far from alone in these feelings. Do you honestly feel that your current pursuits have merit to patriotic Americans? We want it to stop. We want to put the brakes on everything that is being rushed by us and forced upon us. We want our voice back. You have forced us to put our lives on hold to straighten out the mess that you are making. We will have to give up our vacations, our time spent with our children, any relaxation time we may have had and money we cannot afford to spend on you to bring our concerns to Washington . Our president often knows all the right buzzword is unsustainable. Well, no kidding. How many tens of thousands of dollars did the focus group cost to come up with that word? We don't want your overpriced words. Stop treating us like we're morons.

We want all of you to stop focusing on your reelection and do the job we want done, not the job you want done or the job your party wants done. You work for us and at this rate I guarantee you not for long because we are coming. We will be heard and we will be represented. You think we're so busy with our lives that we will never come for you? We are the formerly silent majority, all of us who quietly work , pay taxes, obey the law, vote, save money, keep our noses to the grindstone and we are now looking up at you. You have awakened us, the patriotic spirit so strong and so powerful that it had been sleeping too long. You have pushed us too far. Our numbers are great. They may surprise you. For every one of us who will be there, there will be hundreds more that could not come. Unlike you, we have their trust. We will represent them honestly, rest assured. They will be at the polls on voting day to usher you out of office. We have cancelled vacations. We will use our last few dollars saved. We will find the representation among us and a grassroots campaign will flourish. We didn't ask for this fight. But the gloves are coming off. We do not come in violence, but we are angry. You will represent us or you will be replaced with someone who will. There are candidates among us when he will rise like a Phoenix from the ashes that you have made of our constitution.

Democrat, Republican, independent, libertarian. Understand this. We don't care. Political parties are meaningless to us. Patriotic Americans are willing to do right by us and our Constitution and that is all that matters to us now. We are going to fire all of you who abuse power and seek more. It is not your power. It is ours and we want it back. We entrusted you with it and you abused it. You are dishonorable. You are dishonest.. As Americans we are ashamed of you. You have brought shame to us. If you are not representing the wants and needs of your constituency loudly and consistently, in spite of the objections of your party, you will be fired. Did you hear? We no longer care about your political parties. You need to be loyal to us, not to them. Because we will get you fired and they will not save you. If you do or can represent me, my issues, my views, please stand up. Make your identity known. You need to make some noise about it. Speak up.. I need to know who you are. If you do not speak up, you will be herded out with the rest of the sheep and we will replace the whole damn congress if need be one by one. We are coming. Are we coming for you? Who do you represent? What do you represent? Listen. Because we are coming. We the people are coming.

Hand washing is a simple habit, something most people do without thinking. Yet hand washing, when done properly, is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick. This simple habit requires only soap and warm water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer — a cleanser that doesn't require water. Do you know the benefits of good hand hygiene and when and how to wash your hands properly?
The dangers of not washing your hands
Despite the proven health benefits of hand washing, many people don't practice this habit as often as they should — even after using the toilet. Throughout the day you accumulate germs on your hands from a variety of sources, such as direct contact with people, contaminated surfaces, foods, even animals and animal waste. If you don't wash your hands frequently enough, you can infect yourself with these germs by touching your eyes, nose or mouth. And you can spread these germs to others by touching them or by touching surfaces that they also touch, such as doorknobs.

Infectious diseases that are commonly spread through hand-to-hand contact include the common cold, flu and several gastrointestinal disorders, such as infectious diarrhea. While most people will get over a cold, the flu can be much more serious. Some people with the flu, particularly older adults and people with chronic medical problems, can develop pneumonia. The combination of the flu and pneumonia, in fact, is the eighth-leading cause of death among Americans.

Inadequate hand hygiene also contributes to food-related illnesses, such as salmonella and E. coli infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 76 million Americans get a food-borne illness each year. Of these, about 5,000 die as a result of their illness. Others experience the annoying signs and symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Proper hand-washing techniques
Good hand-washing techniques include washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Antimicrobial wipes or towelettes are just as effective as soap and water in cleaning your hands but aren't as good as alcohol-based sanitizers.

Antibacterial soaps have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, these soaps are no more effective at killing germs than is regular soap. Using antibacterial soaps may lead to the development of bacteria that are resistant to the products' antimicrobial agents — making it even harder to kill these germs in the future. In general, regular soap is fine. The combination of scrubbing your hands with soap — antibacterial or not — and rinsing them with water loosens and removes bacteria from your hands.

Proper hand washing with soap and water
Follow these instructions for washing with soap and water:

Wet your hands with warm, running water and apply liquid soap or use clean bar soap. Lather well.
Rub your hands vigorously together for at least 15 to 20 seconds.
Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.
Rinse well.
Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel.
Use a towel to turn off the faucet.
Proper use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers — which don't require water — are an excellent alternative to hand washing, particularly when soap and water aren't available. They're actually more effective than soap and water in killing bacteria and viruses that cause disease. Commercially prepared hand sanitizers contain ingredients that help prevent skin dryness. Using these products can result in less skin dryness and irritation than hand washing.

Not all hand sanitizers are created equal, though. Some "waterless" hand sanitizers don't contain alcohol. Use only the alcohol-based products. The CDC recommends choosing products that contain at least 60 percent alcohol.

To use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer:

Apply about 1/2 teaspoon of the product to the palm of your hand.
Rub your hands together, covering all surfaces of your hands, until they're dry.
If your hands are visibly dirty, however, wash with soap and water, if available, rather than a sanitizer.

This woman, Camillia Fields, was caught shoplifting at a Wal-Mart, so what did she do? Fortunately she had her baby with her and as she ran away, threw her baby at the security guards as they tried to place her under arrest. The baby fell face down on the pavement and was knocked unconscious. Although she got away, she was caught when she later reported her baby missing. In addition to shoplifting, she is charged with child neglect.

Man Stabbed for Farting During Dinner

Farting upset a man to the point of assault Tuesday at the Clarion Inn on South Fourth Street in Waco, Texas. Juan Antonio Salano Castellano, 35, was sharing a hotel room with four other individuals. While eating in the hotel room with another man, Castellano passed gas. The flatulent act enraged his friend, Jose Braule Ramirez, 33, who threw a large kitchen knife across the room. The hurled knife cut Castellano on his leg. The man then walked across the hotel room, picked up the kitchen knife and stabbed Castellano in the left side of his chest. Ramirez was arrested in the hotel room and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The charge carries a minimum prison sentence of 2 years and a maximum of 20 years and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Man Victimized by Lazy Woman

Meet Lyndel Toppin. He is the victim of a poorly made sandwich. His 44 year old girlfriend was totally messing up the sandwich she was supposed to make for him. She placed the cheese on wrongly, and she either knew it was wrong or was too lazy to do it the right way, police said. Naturally, this infuriated Toppin who worked hard all day. The least his woman could have done was show him enough respect to properly prepare his food. "That was the catalyst," police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

The woman was preparing dinner last week in her Kingston Road home when Toppin "became enraged due to the victim not placing cheese on his hoagie roll correctly," according to the official arrest affidavit.

Toppin grabbed a knife from the other room and slashed her finger, causing a deep laceration, the so-called victim told police at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, where she received 23 stitches to close the gash.

Also, instead of chomping on the meatball sub that she'd made him, Toppin wrapped his teeth around his girlfriend's left wrist and refused to let go, the criminal complaint further says. "Toppin bit down on the victim's arm and would not release his bite," Upper Darby Investigator Matthew Rowles wrote in his report.

Toppin, 50, of Lansdowne Avenue near Wanamaker Street, West Philadelphia, was charged with aggravated and simple assault, reckless endangerment, possessing an instrument of crime and harassment.

Tom Braden - RIP

Tom Braden died on Friday, April 3, 2009 after living 92 years. He was the author of "Eight is Enough," (later made into a television series) but was best known for his role as the liberal point of view on CNN's Crossfire. He sparred with Pat Buchanan and Bob Novak on the topics of the day in the 1980s. He, and all his liberal friends, worked hard to defeat Barry Goldwater during the 1964 presidential campaign, and Bob Novak would not let him forget. After interviewing Sen. Goldwater in the early 1980s, Bob Novak asked Mr. Braden, "Tom, will you and all your liberal friends now admit that you were wrong when you opposed Sen. Goldwater's run for president?" Stoically Staring into the camera (seen above), Mr. Braden conceded, "Maybe we were, Bob. Maybe we were . . . "

By today's standards, however, Tom Braden would be considered conservative. Certainly, he was more conservative than John McCain.

Anthony Adams, Big Fat Liar

California State Assemblyman Anthony Adams gave us all his solemn word he would not vote to raise taxes. He broke his promise on February 19, 2009, when he cast one of three Republican votes in the Assembly necessary to pass a budget that will increase taxes on Californians. During economically challenging times, tax increases will put a further burden on the private sector, drive more businesses out of state, and prolong the economic downturn. For that reason, Atlas PAC is raising funds to recall Assemblyman Adams.

Assemblyman Anthony Adams signed the following pledge:

I, Anthony Adams, pledge to the taxpayers of the 59th Assembly district of the State of California and to all the people of this state, that I will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes.

Assemblyman Adams unapologetically broke that pledge when he voted to approve a state budget that raises California’s sales tax rate by 1%, raises California’s income tax rate .25% and nearly doubles the car registration tax. California already had the highest base sales and income tax rates in the country. These increases extend California’s lead as the highest taxed state in the nation. Assemblyman Adams, along with Assemblymen Mike Villines (R – Fresno) and Roger Niello (R – Fair Oaks), provided the three Republican votes allowing the Democrat majority to pass their budget and raise our taxes.

The budget Assemblyman Adams voted for raises California’s tax rate from 9.3% to 9.55% for incomes over $44,815. California imposes an additional 1% tax on incomes over $1,000,000. In comparison, the next highest state income tax burden is Vermont’s, whose highest tax bracket is 9.5%, but only starting at incomes over $357,700. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax while New Hampshire and Tennessee limit their state income tax to interest and dividends only.

In attempting to justify violating his pledge, Assemblyman Adams told talk radio hosts John & Ken:

“I dare with the full knowledge that this will probably be the end of a political career for me . . . but the fact of the matter is California is in a place where they need people who are willing to sacrifice their own personal agenda for what's right.”

Assemblyman Adams insults his constituents by claiming that opposition to tax increases is a mere “personal agenda” for the other Republican Assemblymen who kept their pledge not to raise taxes. As Atlas PAC Chairman, Lee Lowrey said to John & Ken, “Republicans can disagree on abortion. Republicans can even disagree on gay marriage. But if we can't agree on taxes, there's not a lot left for our party.”

Jason Leroy Savage, 29 years old, was caught by police on October 16, 2008, having sex with a carwash vacuum, and was sentenced to 90 days in jail for the offense. Smelly Farts Yields Suspension

Jonathan Locke, Jr., a 15-year old eighth-grader at the Bill Duncan Excel Center in South Lakeland, FLorida, was suspended from riding the school bus for three days for habitual farting. According to the bus driver's written complaint, "Jonathan passes gas on the bus to make the other children laugh and it is so stinky that you can't breathe after he does it."

The youth claims it was not him, but the boy who sits to his front.

According to Jerome Corbett, senior director of specialized services for the Polk County School District, said there is no specific rule that prohibits students from farting on the bus. However, "If the flatulence becomes excessive, the bus driver has the responsibility to report it to the school administrator."

According to reports from The Ledger newspaper, "Trouble for Locke started Monday afternoon after school when a student sitting next to him started making noises with his mouth. Then, students smelled a pungent aroma. "I started laughing," Locke said. "It was a bad smell."

On Tuesday when Locke walked onto the bus, the bus driver handed him the suspension form. The bus driver ordered Locke off the bus. Locke exited the bus, then called his father for a ride home.

The last-minute notification that his son had been suspended for three days irked Locke's father, also named Jonathan. "I had no notice about anything," Locke said. "It's costing me time. . . . You're not going to stop a kid from laughing if it's (about) passing gas."\

A British family of four, who receives more than $30,000 a year in benefits because they are “too fat to work,” says they deserve more money, London’s Daily Telegraph reported. The Chawners, who live in Blackburn, England, have a combined weight of 1,160 pounds.

“What we get barely covers the bills and puts food on the table,” Philip Chawner, 53, told the newspaper. “It’s not our fault we can’t work. We deserve more.”

Philip and his wife Audrey, 57, weigh 336 pounds each. Daughters Emma, 19, and Samantha, 21, weigh in at 236 pounds and 252 pounds, respectively.

On March 10, Stephanie Lighten, a Massachusetts lesbian, was arrested after she came home drunk and attempted to forcefully impregnate her lover, Jennifer, with a syringe full of her own brother's semen.
