Borking - 21 Years Ago

On this day in 1987, the Democratic Party began their long descent into what is now know as the "politics of personal destruction." Perhaps the most qualified man to have been nominated to the Supreme Court, Robert Bork, was "Borked" by an onslaught of radical lefties who snooped through every aspect of his personal life. They even paid a local video rental business to release a list all the movies Robert Bork had rented, hoping against hope that a porno would be among them. None found. Other victims of the Democratic invention of Borking: John Tower, Clarence Thomas, Sarah Palin, and most GOP nominees to the Supreme Court.

On a happy note, about a month after Robert Bork's nomination was rejected by the Senate, I was walking to class along Pauley Pavillion at UCLA. And who should I see walking toward me?

Wearing a headband, sneakers, shorts, and a T-shirt was California's own Keating 5 Senator Alan Cranston!

I had seen him on campus before, using our campus gym facilities for free, not doubt. As I approached him, I quickly raised by arm and gave him a big 1-finger salute, and kept it going for the entire 20 feet or so the I had left on my approach. He glared at me with a look of shock and confusion. "That one is for Robert Bork," I whispered to myself as I walked away. I never saw the walking skelleton in person again, so I'm glad my 20 year old, immature self seized the moment.
